Orlando Frazão wins the prize for Best Physics Dissertation, 2009-2010

The Portuguese Physical Society has awarded the prize Fernando Bragança Gil 2012 , for best Physics Dissertation in a Portuguese Institution, to ORLANDO FRAZÂO. The jury analyzed about 80 dissertations defended in 2009 and 2010.

Orlando Frazão

ORLANDO FRAZAO was a doctoral student in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. He defended his doctoral thesis, supervised by Professor José Luis Santos, in 2009. He is a researcher of INESCTEC in the Unit Opto-Electronic Systems, in which he carried out is doctorate work.

One of his major contributions consisted in the development of sensors based on photonic crystal fibers, having been a pioneer in Portugal in the  use of these sensor structures. He published during his doctorate the first review article in this area (in LASER & PHOTONICS REVIEWS - Impact Factor 7.3 - chosen for  the issue cover). During his doctorate he published about 30 papers in international journals. In 2007  he was awarded a Best Student Paper in one of the most prestigious conferences in the field.

This prize Fernando Bragança Gil is is awarded for the second time and it is worth noting that the first edição was also won a doctoral student of  the Department of Physics and Astronomy, Eduardo Vieira de Castro.
