Physics Olympiad 2012

Physics Olympiad: Porto 2011.

The North Section of the Portuguese Physical Society organizes, in collaboration with the Department of Physics and Astronomy of FCUP (its students and teachers) and teachers from schools from  the north of Portugal, the regional stage of the Physics Olympiad (PO) (http:// olimpiadas.spf.pt /).

In the   PO compete 9th grade student teams - up to three members -, and 11th grade students individually. Schools are represented by a team of category A and a maximum of three students in category B. The regional stage selects three National level teams A and ten students in category B. The national stage usually takes place in the Electricity Museum in Lisbon at the beginning of June. (The dates of the current year can be found on the official site of the Olympics, or the page of the north delegation SPF (http://norte.spf.pt)).

The Olympic Saturdays at DFA are of great excitement for teachers and students. The tests take place during the morning - simultaneously throughout the country. In parallel, we hold activities for the accompanying teachers. By early afternoon, and while waiting for the annoucement of the winners, teachers and students participate in a wide range of activities (talks about hot topics in physics, peddy paper, visits, debates). The number of students participating has grown from year to year. In 2011 the PO was attended by about 400 participants, accompanied by their teachers!
