Palestra - The Physics of Light Springs: From electron acceleration to superfluid light

Laser-matter interactions with twisted photons have received considerable attention in recent years. It is known that twisted photons carry a finite amount of orbital angular momentum (OAM), which differs from the usual spin polarisation.

In a recent work, we have proposed light springs as a new paradigm for twisted photons. Light springs are special arrangements of twisted photons, which have a twist in energy, not just in the field amplitude.

In this talk, we summarise the properties of light springs and explain the difference with respect to simple twisted photon beams. Light springs allow us to explore new radiation and acceleration phenomena. In particular, we consider the acceleration of helical electron beams. The role of light springs on superfluid light and on self-modulation is also discussed.
