Twisted Layers, Narrow Bands, and New Phases in Two-Dimensional Materials


Abstract: The discovery of superconductivity and other electronic phases in twisted bilayer graphene has led to an intensive study of similar properties in other arrangements of two-dimensional materials. These systems are based on structures of a scale much larger than typical inter-atomic distances (moiré structures), and they provide a fascinating connection between microscopic and mesoscopic physics. The origin of the unusual properties of twisted bilayer graphene, still not fully understood, is reviewed with emphasis on new effects and interactions not encountered before in condensed matter physics. The similarities and differences with other materials with complex electronic phases will be analysed.

Biographic Info: Francisco Guinea got his BSc degree (1975) in Physics from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and PhD (1980) at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. From 1982-84, he was a Fullbright Fellow at the University of California, Santa Barbara becoming a Professor at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in 1985, and Senior Researcher at the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas in 1987. Since then, he was a visiting Professor at the University of Michigan (1991-92), as well as a visiting Researcher at the University of California San Diego (1997) and Boston University (2004-05). He joined Imdea Nanoscience in 2005, currently focusing his theoretical studies in the physics of electrons in two-dimensional systems. F. Guinea has published over 400 scientific papers, with an h-index of 106 and more than 50 article with over 100 citations. He was also the recipient of several awards, such as the biannual National Prize for Physics (Spain) and the Gold Medal of the Spanish Physical Society.
